This page explains the various ways of removing a crown from a bottle without damaging it.

Different style openers can leave varying amount of damage. Generally considered the best way to remove a cap regardless of the opener used is to slowly and gently open while rotating the bottle so that it is weakened in over four places. It is often recommended to further place kitchen roll or thick paper between the crown and bottle opener to avoid scratches.
